Did Beyond The Data

Dig beyond the data & look beyond the trophies...

It’s that time of year, awards nights and parties fill up the calendar, its a time for celebrating & acknowledgement of all the great achievements over the past year. But, there’s another side that comes with the imminent new year approaching. Comparison and disappointment come to mind as emotions that tend to bottle up over the New Year. The result is whilst we are more experienced heading into the rest of this year, we’re also less confident and confidence is the accelerant to execution.

So here’s what I’ve learnt from a decade of setting and reviewing goals over this period. “Dig beyond the Data” to determine where your success fell in 2019. You see, metrics don’t tell the whole story, in fact they’re the minority when it comes to measuring progress, yet we assume they’re the defining factor. So instead of measuring 2019 off bank balances, sales figures, promotions, new cars and new Instagram follower, try digging beyond the data.

Metrics aren’t fixed & there’s no guarantee that the perceived success that came in 2019 will flow into 2020 and beyond. So instead ask yourself some character based questions that if highlighted will give you the confidence or at least the courage to believe that 2020 can be a forward movement for you. Maybe you developed grit this year by overcoming challenges that you wouldn’t have in the past? Did you add depth to some relationships? Create some new ones? Learnt to say no, learnt to say yes? Spent more time with those that matter? Spent time on the things that matter? Set some goals? Became more self aware? Went through a lifestyle/career change? Survived a battle? Found a mentor? Found time for yourself? Started a business? Walked away from something finally? Forgave?

Point is sometimes you need to look harder to find your wins, rather than work out if we’ve won or lost, start looking for the character traits that tell the tale of the trajectory heading into the new year. Remember that confidence is the key that unlocks the door to skill and it’s no one else’s job to build your confidence. It’s YOURS! 2020 here we come, take your best self with you.
